Sawyer Road Career Day, May 17
![]() Sawyer Road Elementary K-3 students recently participated in a Career Day focused on Transportation, Distribution, Logistics and Law, Public Safety, and Security career clusters. Career Day served as a supplement to career lessons delivered earlier in the year by school counselors.
Sawyer Road Field Days, May 16-17 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary K-2 and grades 3-5 Field Day recently provided students with fun, engaging activities including musical chairs, scooter racing, parachute, keep the ball up, Bounce House, relay race with ball and partner, face painting, and a chance to observe newborn baby chicks. Despite the cloudy skies, everyone had a “shining” experience. Sawyer Road 5th Graders Learn Dance Basics- Georgia Ballet Momentum, April 15 – May 15 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary fifth graders recently participated in the Georgia Ballet’s Momentum program, a weekly dance class where they learn the basics of dance and choreography. The students performed their routines for other students and parents on May 15. Any student taking part in Momentum is offered a full scholarship to Georgia Ballet’s summer classes.
Sawyer Road Oceaneers Willy Wonka JR Performance, May 11 & 13 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary 4/5 Oceaneer Players recently performed Willy Wonka JR with colorful costumes, great choreography, beautiful set designs, and amazing special effects including bubbles and an inflatable dress. Student Reader Tops 4M Words, May 10 ![]() Congratulations to Sawyer Road Elementary student Emily for reaching 628.6 Accelerated Reader (AR) points with a 99.4 accuracy and for reading 4,018,000 words. Emily is a four-time millionaire Marietta Reads! reader. Sawyer Road Celebrates Pioneer & STEM Day, May 3 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary fourth graders recently enjoyed Pioneer Day as the culmination of their “Changing Nations” International Baccalaureate (IB) planner. They also celebrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) Day and participated in all of the learning activities. Sawyer Road Celebrates Georgia STEM Day, May 3 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary second graders celebrated Georgia STEM day by constructing boats, third graders built drought flower pots, Kindergartners learned about living and non-living things, and fifth grade presented Harry Potter Projects. Sawyer Road - Rotary Dictionary Donation, May 1 ![]() As part of its Dictionary Project, the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro gave new dictionaries to Sawyer Road Elementary third-graders. The gift of dictionaries was very much appreciated by the students and teachers. Thank you, Rotarians! Sawyer Road CRCT Pep Rally, April 16 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary third, fourth, and fifth graders prepped for their upcoming Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) with a pep rally led by “Mr. Rob”. As they departed the pep rally, kindergarten, first and second graders greeted them in the hallways to cheer them on! Sawyer Road Rides Reading Wave, March 20 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary students are riding the wave of reading earning almost 44,000 Accelerated Reader (AR) points, and are only 4,500 points away from achieving the school-wide reading goal of 48,500 AR points! Twenty-six students have read over 1 million words. Top Readers will attend the school’s first annual Millionaire Bash. Hang Ten, Sawyer Road! Keep riding the reading wave! Student of the Month ![]() Emily Howard, a student at Sawyer Road Elementary, was named the March 2013 Student of the Month. Emily is a straight-A student who loves to read. In fact, she was the first student at Sawyer Road to read 2,000,000 words! And, she recently reached her goal of 3,000,000 words. She enjoys helping other students and always encourages her classmates to do their best. Not only is Emily an outstanding student, she is also active in numerous school activities including the World Explorers Club, the Singing Starfish and the Reading Bowl Team. She is also a Girl Scout and helps with Toys for Tots collections. |
Georgia Ballet Donation Expands Momentum – Sawyer Road & Lockheed, March 12 ![]() On Tuesday, March 12, representatives from The Georgia Power Foundation joined Marietta City Schools (MCS) Superintendent, Dr. Emily Lembeck at Sawyer Road Elementary to present a $10,000 donation to The Georgia Ballet. Momentum, The Georgia Ballet’s long-term residency program for Title I public schools provides children the opportunity to learn the basics of dance training through weekly classes. This year, The Georgia Ballet expands the Momentum program to include students at Sawyer Road and Lockheed Elementary. Sawyer Road Junior Achievement Day, Feb. 1 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary recently hosted Junior Achievement (JA) Day. Over 60 volunteers from Bank of America, Assurant, and Genuine Parts taught detailed curriculums on economics, career opportunities, entrepreneurship, and business development. Students participated in hands-on activities geared to help them develop interests and skills to be successful in their future careers. Ms. Holman gave an overview of Common Core, teachers joined parents for math activities while the students built objects with LEGO® bricks. Sawyer Road World Exploration Projects, Dec. 14 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary second grade World Exploration Club students recently presented their author study projects. These are projects that students volunteer to do on their own, at home, to extend their learning. Sawyer Road PTA Holiday Dance, Dec. 7 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary PTA held their holiday dance with the help of MHS students. Their assistance selling tickets, pizza and drinks, and leading the children in dances to the music played by our very own DJ, Mr. Rob was invaluable. MCS Educators Present – IBGA Roundtable, Nov. 1
![]() Two Marietta City Schools educators, Karin Greeson (Marietta Sixth Grade Academy) and Lindsay Bryan (Sawyer Road Elementary) recently presented at the 2012 International Baccalaureate (IB) Georgia Fall Roundtable. Each presented break-out sessions for IB Middle Years Program (MYP) and the IB Primary Years Program (PYP). Greeson shared the MYP Criteria Tracker, a tool that helps track student achievement. Bryan presented “Integrating English Language Arts into PYP Science and Social Studies.” Sawyer Road Students Win City Fire Safety Poster Contest, Oct. 31 ![]() Estephanie Bravo a student at Sawyer Road Elementary was named the grand prize winner of Marietta's fire safety poster contest and got to ride home from school on a fire truck. Taylor Spenser was the Runner Up. These students competed against all the other elementary schools in the system. Sawyer Road Send Monarchs To Mexico, Oct. 12 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary second graders recently sent symbolic butterflies to Mexico to coincide with the real monarchs flying south to Mexico. The students participated in the Journey North Web site activities as part of their Life Cycles Unit and to celebrate the monarchs' amazing migration! They now look forward to receiving symbolic butterflies in the spring from their friends in Mexico! Sawyer Road Grand friends & Grandparents Day, Nov. 2 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary recently celebrated Grandparents and Grand friends by inviting them to have lunch at the school with their grandchildren. Lots of Grandparents and Grand friends attended and had an enjoyable lunch with family and friends. Sawyer Road Volunteers Reduce Landfill, Nov. 2 Sawyer Road Elementary parent volunteers visit the school 2-3 times a week to help with the school’s composting and recycling program. They performed different science activities, including making ice cream, making bottle rockets, testing oil spill cleanup in the ocean, making a safe structure for an egg so when dropped it won’t break, constructing airplanes and testing flight Character Education, Sept. 28 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary kindergarteners, first, and second graders received a lesson in character as they watched and participated in the Tell Tale Theater production in the school cafetorium. Taste of Sawyer Road, Sept. 27 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary families recently enjoyed their first “Taste of Sawyer Road” PTA event. Parents, students, and staff tasted food from different cultures, wore native attire, listened to music from different countries, and made crafts. Food vendors featured included, The Cuban Diner, Golden Krust Bakery, Mediterranean Grill, Zaxby's, Al's BBQ, and homemade international foods prepared by school families. Sawyer Road Family Fun Night, Aug, 28 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary recently held their first Family Fun Night at Zaxby’s! A good time was had by everyone, thanks to our future Partner in Education. PTA Hosts Movie Night, Aug. 13 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary PTA recently organized a magical night of food, fellowship and movie fun. Over 350 students, staff and families enjoyed pizza, popcorn and Dr. Seuss' children's classic, The Lorax. PTA memberships support many needed programs at Sawyer Road such as field trip scholarships, classroom reading materials, and the donation of an Xbox to the Starfish Reef, Sawyer Road’s positive reinforcement room. Sawyer Road Welcomes Partner – The Alliance Theatre, July 24 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary recently welcomed The Alliance Theatre as a new Partner in Education. Sawyer Road and The Alliance Theatre have had an active Wolf Trap and Dramaturgy program partnership for 7 years. Sawyer Road 2013 Preview Kinder Experience, July 24-25 ![]() Sawyer Road Elementary recently hosted its 2012 - 2013 Preview Kinder Experience. The two-day event was attended by over 60 students. The future Sawyer Road “Starfish” got acquainted with their new school, made new friends and had lots of fun. |
